The celebration of the Eucharist, the Last Supper, has been the central expression of Christian faith around the globe from the beginning of Christianity right up to today. By breaking bread, by doing what Jesus commanded, we make presence his own healing work, his death on the cross. In receiving bread and wine, the body and blood of Jesus Christ, we live out community with him and with one another.
The altar breads which are used for this are made from unleavened batter. This is a reminder of the Jewish passover.
